Chappell Roan

The camp, drag-inspired pop star behind Good Luck, Babe! and Pink Pony Club, who went from a dropped artist to a Grammy winner.

Chappell Roan made pop loud, queer and theatrical again. Her camp, drag-inspired style and big synth-pop hooks turned her from a dropped artist into a Grammy winner in a few short years. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, she took her stage name from her late grandfather and his favorite song.

A slow build

Roan signed to a major label at seventeen, released the single “Pink Pony Club” in 2020, then got dropped and went independent. Reunited with producer Dan Nigro, she released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in 2023. It gathered fans slowly rather than overnight.

The breakthrough

In 2024 everything broke open. She opened for Olivia Rodrigo on the GUTS World Tour, delivered a viral Coachella set, and released “Good Luck, Babe!”, which reached number four on the Hot 100 and pulled her album up to number two. “Hot to Go!” and “Pink Pony Club” became anthems.

The Grammy

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Roan won Best New Artist from six nominations, and used her speech to call on labels to pay artists a living wage. She also teamed with labelmate Sabrina Carpenter on a cover of Wham!’s “Last Christmas”. Later singles “The Giver” and “The Subway” kept her in the top five.

On her own terms

Roan has been open about the strain of sudden fame, speaking out against invasive fan and press behavior and setting public boundaries. Her music celebrates queer identity without apology, and she has become one of the most distinctive new voices in pop.
