Bruce Springsteen

The Boss, behind Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A., who turned working-class American life into stadium-sized rock with the E Street Band.

Bruce Springsteen turned the lives of working-class America into stadium-sized rock and roll. Across five decades and more than twenty albums, he and the E Street Band built a reputation for marathon concerts and songs that take ordinary people seriously. Born September 23, 1949, in Long Branch, New Jersey, and raised in Freehold, he became the figure fans simply call the Boss.

Born to Run

Signed to Columbia in 1972 by John Hammond, the same talent scout who had discovered Bob Dylan, Springsteen drew early comparisons to him. His third album, Born to Run (1975), made him a star, landing him on the covers of Time and Newsweek the same week with its epic songs “Thunder Road” and “Jungleland”.

Born in the U.S.A.

After the stark, acoustic Nebraska (1982), Springsteen released Born in the U.S.A. in 1984. It produced seven top-ten singles and sold tens of millions of copies. The title track, often misread as a flag-waving anthem, was a bitter account of a Vietnam veteran coming home to nothing, the gap between sound and meaning that has followed the song ever since.

The Boss and the band

Much of Springsteen’s power comes from the E Street Band and their three-hour live shows. He saw the Beatles on television as a teenager and bought his first guitar; decades later he would draw on the Beatles, Roy Orbison and Phil Spector to build his wall-of-sound rock. His marathon concerts remain among the most demanding and beloved in the business.

The honors

Springsteen has won twenty Grammy Awards, an Oscar for “Streets of Philadelphia” and a Tony for his Broadway residency. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His 2023 to 2025 tour with the E Street Band became one of the highest-grossing in history, and the 2025 film Deliver Me from Nowhere brought the making of Nebraska to the screen.
