Peso Pluma took corridos tumbados, a Mexican sound built on acoustic strings and street stories, and pushed it onto the global charts. Born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija on June 15, 1999, in Zapopan, Jalisco, he learned guitar as a teenager and built a style that fuses regional Mexican music with trap and reggaeton.
The breakthrough
After two early albums and the certified single “El Belicon”, Peso Pluma broke wide open in 2023. “Ella Baila Sola”, his duet with Eslabon Armado, became the first regional Mexican song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. That same week he placed eight songs on the chart at once, a record for a Mexican artist.
Genesis and Exodo
His album Genesis (2023) won the Grammy for Best Musica Mexicana Album and reached the top three on the Billboard 200. The double album Exodo (2024) widened his range, splitting one disc of corridos from a second disc of urban tracks with guests from across Latin and US pop.
The collaborations
He has shared songs with much of the new Latin wave, including “Qlona” with Karol G and sessions with Bizarrap and Natanael Cano. His corridos often touch on narcoculture, a tradition that has drawn both huge audiences and public debate in Mexico.
The reach
Peso Pluma is now Mexico’s most-streamed artist of all time and runs his own label, Double P Records. More than anyone, he is credited with carrying musica mexicana to a worldwide audience that had rarely heard it before.
