Shawn Mendes turned six-second Vine clips into an arena-filling pop career, all built on his voice, his guitar and his own songwriting. Born August 8, 1998, in Toronto and raised in Pickering, Ontario, he taught himself guitar from YouTube and posted covers that drew millions of views.
The early albums
He signed with Island Records and released Handwritten (2015), making him one of the youngest artists to debut at number one. Its single “Stitches” became his first big hit, followed by Illuminate (2016) and “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”.
Senorita
His self-titled third album (2018) brought “In My Blood” and “Youth”, a collaboration with Khalid. In 2019 he and Camila Cabello released “Senorita”, his first number-one single, after their earlier duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
Wonder
Wonder (2020) made him the youngest male artist to top the Billboard 200 with four albums. The album’s single “Monster” was a duet with Justin Bieber. All four of his albums opened at number one in both the US and Canada.
Beyond the charts
He has won multiple Juno Awards in Canada and been nominated for Grammys. After a 2022 break to focus on his wellbeing, he returned to music and film, voicing the lead in Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.
