Karol G broke through the male-dominated world of reggaeton to become the biggest female Latin artist on the planet. Born Carolina Giraldo Navarro on February 14, 1991, in Medellin, Colombia, she spent a decade grinding before her breakthrough, and she has used her success to rewrite what a woman can do in the genre.
The long road
She appeared on Colombian television as a teenager and moved to New York in 2014, working with producer Ovy on the Drums along the way. Labels once told her a woman could not succeed in reggaeton. Her 2017 debut Unstoppable, with “Ahora Me Llama” featuring Bad Bunny, proved them wrong.
Tusa and global fame
“Tusa” (2019), her collaboration with Nicki Minaj, became a worldwide hit and crossed over far beyond Latin audiences. The albums Ocean and KG0516 followed, the latter carrying “Bichota” and “Location”, as she became the most-streamed female Latin artist in the world.
Manana Sera Bonito
Her 2023 album Manana Sera Bonito made history as the first all-Spanish-language album by a woman to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. It featured “TQG” with fellow Colombian Shakira, her highest-charting Hot 100 single, and won the Grammy for Best Musica Urbana Album, a first for a woman.
A Latina icon
Karol G has won a Grammy and several Latin Grammys, and was the first Latina named Woman of the Year at Billboard Women in Music. In 2025 she returned with Tropicoqueta, leaning into the Colombian sounds she grew up with. She turned reggaeton’s bravado on its head and made it her own.
