Madonna

The Queen of Pop, behind Like a Virgin, Vogue and Hung Up, a constant reinventor and the best-selling female recording artist in history.

Madonna invented the modern pop star. Across four decades she has reinvented her sound and image so many times that constant change became her trademark. Born Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, she moved to New York in 1978 with almost nothing and built herself into the best-selling female recording artist in history. They call her the Queen of Pop, and no serious rival has taken the title.

The 1980s and the rise

Her self-titled debut arrived in 1983, but Like a Virgin (1984) made her a phenomenon, topped by the title track and “Material Girl”. True Blue and Like a Prayer followed, each pairing huge singles with videos that started arguments about sex, religion and race. By the end of the decade she had turned the music video into an art form and a weapon.

Vogue and reinvention

“Vogue”, released in 1990, brought New York ballroom culture to the mainstream and became one of her signature hits. Through the 1990s and 2000s she kept changing: the electronica of Ray of Light (1998), the club-built Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005) and its single “Hung Up”. Each era looked and sounded different from the last.

The biggest stage

Madonna has sold around 300 million records and won seven Grammy Awards. She was the highest-grossing female touring act for nearly two decades, until Taylor Swift passed her. Her Celebration Tour, which ran from 2023 into 2024, ended with a free concert in Rio de Janeiro that drew one of the largest crowds in concert history.

Still moving

She has kept collaborating with younger artists, joining The Weeknd and Playboi Carti on “Popular” in 2023. In April 2026 she appeared at Coachella with Sabrina Carpenter to perform “Vogue”, “Like a Prayer” and a new duet. More than forty years in, she is still on stage.
