Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl's rock band, behind Everlong, The Pretender and Best of You, with 15 Grammys.

Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle in 1994 by Dave Grohl. After Nirvana ended following Kurt Cobain’s death, Grohl, their former drummer, recorded a full album of his own songs almost entirely alone, and the project grew into one of the biggest rock bands of its era. The name comes from a World War II term for unidentified flying objects.

The debut

The self-titled debut (1995) carried “This Is a Call” and “Big Me”. Grohl then built a band to tour and record.

The Colour and the Shape

Their 1997 album The Colour and the Shape brought “Everlong”, “My Hero” and “Monkey Wrench”, with Taylor Hawkins joining on drums. There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999) and its single “Learn to Fly” won the band its first Grammy for Best Rock Album.

Arena years

In Your Honor (2005) gave them “Best of You”, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace (2007) brought “The Pretender”, and Wasting Light (2011) topped charts worldwide. They have won 15 Grammys, including five for Best Rock Album, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.

Beyond the band

Grohl has long crossed paths with other acts: he drummed for Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live and was invited to join the Heartbreakers, jammed with Led Zeppelin‘s Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones at Wembley in 2008, and the band played a Deadmau5 remix of “Rope” at the 2012 Grammys. Their drummer Taylor Hawkins died in 2022.
