The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971. Built around Don Henley and Glenn Frey, they fused country rock with polished California pop and became the best-selling American band of all time.
Take It Easy
They met as Linda Ronstadt’s backing musicians before going solo on David Geffen’s Asylum label. Their 1972 debut carried “Take It Easy”, co-written by Jackson Browne, and “Witchy Woman”. “Desperado” followed in 1973.
One of These Nights
One of These Nights (1975) was their first number-one album, with “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Take It to the Limit”. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 became one of the best-selling albums ever.
Hotel California
Hotel California (1976) was their peak, its title track winning the Grammy for Record of the Year, alongside “New Kid in Town” and “Life in the Fast Lane”. They cut the album at the same Miami studio where the Bee Gees were recording.
Solo turns and legacy
Don Henley duetted with Stevie Nicks on “Leather and Lace” in 1981, the same era that made fellow Los Angeles act Fleetwood Mac superstars. The band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998; Glenn Frey died in 2016 at age 67.
