Lizzo is an American singer, rapper and classically trained flutist whose feel-good anthems and message of self-love made her one of the biggest pop breakouts of the late 2010s. Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on April 27, 1988, in Detroit and raised in Houston, she studied flute before turning to music full-time.
The breakthrough
After years in the Minneapolis indie scene, she signed to Atlantic and broke through with Cuz I Love You (2019). The album’s deluxe edition included “Truth Hurts”, a 2017 song that went viral and spent seven weeks at number one.
Grammy night
That run earned her eight Grammy nominations in 2020, the most of any artist that year, and three wins. Her 2016 single “Good as Hell” became a hit, later re-released as a remix with Ariana Grande.
Special
In 2021 she teamed with Cardi B on “Rumors”, then released Special (2022), led by “About Damn Time”. That single won Record of the Year, making her the first Black woman to take the award since Whitney Houston in 1994.
More than music
Lizzo has won four Grammy Awards and an Emmy for her reality competition series. A vocal advocate for body positivity, she still works her classical flute training into her live shows.
