Mariah Carey is one of the best-selling artists in history and the holder of more number-one US singles than any other solo act. Born March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York, she paired a five-octave range and a signature whistle register with songwriting that helped shape modern pop and R&B.
The debut and the 90s
Her self-titled debut (1990) sent its first four singles to number one and won her the Grammy for Best New Artist behind “Vision of Love”. Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995) became diamond-selling blockbusters, carried by “Hero”, “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day”, which spent a record 16 weeks at number one.
The Christmas classic
Her 1994 album Merry Christmas gave the world “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, now the longest-running number-one song on the Hot 100 and the best-selling holiday single by a woman. The hit earned her the nickname the Queen of Christmas. In 1998 she paired with Whitney Houston on “When You Believe” for The Prince of Egypt.
The comeback
After a rough stretch around the 2001 film Glitter, Carey came roaring back with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), the year’s best-selling US album. Its single “We Belong Together” ruled the chart for 14 weeks and was later named song of the decade, restoring her standing as a megastar.
The records
Carey has 19 number-one Hot 100 singles, the most of any solo artist, and five Grammy Awards. She has kept recording and touring, joining Ariana Grande on a 2024 remix of “yes, and?” and releasing her sixteenth album, Here for It All, in 2025.
