The Rolling Stones

The British rock band behind Satisfaction, Paint It Black and Gimme Shelter, still touring more than sixty years on.

The Rolling Stones are one of the most enduring bands in rock history, still touring and recording more than sixty years after they formed. Built in London in 1962 around singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, they took American blues and turned it into the gritty, swaggering sound that helped define rock and roll.

The British Invasion

The Stones started out covering blues and R&B before Jagger and Richards became one of the great songwriting teams. They arrived as the rougher counterpart to the Beatles in the British Invasion, then found their own voice with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Paint It Black” in the mid-1960s.

The classic records

A run of albums from Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed to Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. cemented their reputation, alongside songs like “Gimme Shelter”, “Honky Tonk Women” and “Angie”. “Start Me Up”, from 1981’s Tattoo You, became one of their most recognizable later hits.

The lineup

The classic core was Jagger, Richards, Brian Jones, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts. Ronnie Wood joined on guitar in 1975. Watts, the steady heartbeat of the band for nearly sixty years, died in 2021, a loss that pushed the others to finish new music.

Hackney Diamonds

In 2023 the Stones released Hackney Diamonds, their first album of new material in 18 years, which won the Grammy for Best Rock Album. Lady Gaga sang on “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” and Elton John played piano, part of a guest list that spanned generations. They entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1989 and remain among the highest-grossing live acts ever.
