Tate McRae moved from competitive dance floors to the top of the pop charts in just a few years. A dancer first, she brings that physical, rhythmic instinct to a run of singles that blend confessional lyrics with dance-pop production. Born July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Canada, she first reached a wide audience as a teenager.
From dance to song
McRae placed third on So You Think You Can Dance in 2016, the furthest any Canadian had gone on the show. A song she wrote and posted online went viral, and she signed to RCA. One of her earliest tracks, “Tear Myself Apart”, was co-written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas.
You Broke Me First
“You Broke Me First” (2020) became her first global hit and her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, followed in 2022 and reached the top five in Canada.
Greedy and the breakthrough
In 2023 she leaned fully into pop with “Greedy”, which topped the Billboard Global 200 and became her signature song. The album Think Later cemented the shift. So Close to What (2025) then gave her a first number-one album in the US, carried by “Sports car” and “It’s ok I’m ok”.
What I Want
In 2025 she landed her first US number-one single as the featured voice on Morgan Wallen‘s “What I Want”, and earned her first Grammy nomination for “Just Keep Watching” from the F1 film soundtrack.
