Doja Cat built a career on refusing to stay in one place, moving between pop, rap and R&B and reinventing herself with each album. Born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini on October 21, 1995, in Los Angeles, she came up through the internet, turning viral songs into a string of genuine hits. She has won a Grammy and sold tens of millions of records, all while keeping a sharp, internet-native sense of humor at the center of her image.
From SoundCloud to Hot Pink
She first drew attention with songs posted online, and her 2018 track “Mooo!” went viral on the strength of its absurd charm. Her real commercial breakthrough came with the 2019 album Hot Pink and its single “Say So”, which reached number one on the Hot 100 after a remix with Nicki Minaj.
Planet Her
Planet Her, in 2021, was her biggest album yet, a glossy pop-rap record that produced a run of hits. “Kiss Me More” with SZA won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance, her first, and “You Right” with The Weeknd, “Need to Know” and “Woman” kept her on the radio for months.
Scarlet and a harder turn
Tired of being boxed in as a pop star, she made Scarlet in 2023 a rap-focused record with a darker image. Its lead single “Paint the Town Red” became her first solo number one and her biggest song to date. The album answered critics who questioned whether she was a real rapper.
Vie
In 2025 she turned back toward pop with Vie, an album built on glossy 1980s synth sounds, led by “Jealous Type”. It reunited her with SZA on “Take Me Dancing”. Across five albums she has gathered nineteen Grammy nominations, a sign of how seriously the industry takes her range.
