Travis Scott is one of hip-hop’s most ambitious sound architects, a rapper and producer who builds dense, psychedelic records and turns his concerts into full-scale spectacles. Born Jacques Bermon Webster II on April 30, 1991, in Houston, Texas, he took his stage name partly from his idol Kid Cudi. Across four solo albums he has scored a run of number ones and become one of the most influential figures in modern rap.
Rodeo to Astroworld
His debut album Rodeo arrived in 2015, followed by Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight in 2016, his first number one. Then came Astroworld in 2018, named after a defunct Houston theme park. Its lead hit, “Sicko Mode” with Drake, gave him his first number-one single and remains one of the biggest rap songs of the era.
Cactus Jack
Scott built more than a discography. His Cactus Jack label and brand turned out the compilation albums JackBoys, signed artists like Don Toliver, and produced high-profile deals with Nike, Dior and McDonald’s. He also became one of the first artists to stage a concert inside a video game, drawing tens of millions of players.
The Astroworld tragedy
In November 2021 a crowd surge at Scott’s Astroworld Festival in Houston killed ten people and injured many more, one of the deadliest concert disasters in US history. Scott expressed his condolences and faced lawsuits, and a Texas grand jury later declined to bring charges. He stepped back from the spotlight for a time.
Utopia
Scott returned in 2023 with Utopia, his fourth straight number-one album, featuring “Fe!n”, “Meltdown” with Drake and “K-pop” with Bad Bunny and The Weeknd. He paired it with a film, Circus Maximus, and a tour that became the highest-grossing by a solo rapper at the time. Despite eight Grammy nominations he has yet to win one.
