Sam Smith

The British singer behind Stay With Me, Writing's on the Wall and Unholy, whose soul-influenced voice powered some of the decade's biggest ballads.

Sam Smith is a British singer whose soaring, soul-influenced voice powered some of the biggest ballads of the 2010s before they moved toward dance-pop. Born on May 19, 1992, in England, Smith uses they/them pronouns and first reached listeners through guest features.

In the Lonely Hour

After guesting on Disclosure’s “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La”, Smith arrived with In the Lonely Hour (2014). The album topped the UK chart and won four Grammys, including Best New Artist, with “Stay with Me” taking Record and Song of the Year.

A Bond theme and beyond

Smith wrote “Writing’s on the Wall” for the James Bond film Spectre, winning an Oscar and a Golden Globe. The Thrill of It All (2017) followed, led by the number-one “Too Good at Goodbyes”.

The dance turn

Smith broadened their sound with “Promises”, a UK number one with Calvin Harris, and “Dancing with a Stranger” with Normani, the most-played radio song of 2019. Love Goes (2020) leaned further into electronic textures.

Unholy and Gloria

In 2022 “Unholy” with Kim Petras became Smith’s first US number one and won a Grammy, making Smith the first openly non-binary artist to win one. It led the 2023 album Gloria, which also featured a collaboration with Ed Sheeran.
