Lord Huron

The Los Angeles-based band was founded by Ben Schneider, a Michigan-born songwriter and visual artist, and grew from a solo bedroom project into a full group known for elaborate, story-driven albums. A solo project from Michigan

Ben Schneider was born in Okemos, Michigan, in 1984 and grew up visiting Lake Huron, the Great Lake that gave the band its name. He studied visual arts at the University of Michigan, finished his degree in France, then moved to New York and on to Los Angeles in 2005. Schneider started Lord Huron in 2010 as a solo endeavor, recording his early EPs, Into the Sun and Mighty, entirely on his own. As demand grew for live shows, he recruited childhood friends Mark Barry on drums, Miguel Briseño on bass, keyboard and theremin, and Tom Renaud on guitar, turning the project into a real band.

Building a world

Their 2012 debut, Lonesome Dreams, arrived with a fully imagined backstory: the songs were presented as the work of a fictional adventure novelist named George Ranger Johnson, complete with a website and a series of Western-styled music videos. That world-building became a signature. The Wall Street Journal described their sound as having a cinematic flair heavy on mood and imagery, comparing them to The Band, Neil Young, My Morning Jacket and Fleet Foxes. The Night We Met

Their second album, Strange Trails (2015), debuted at number one on Billboard’s Folk Albums chart and contained the song that would change everything. “The Night We Met” became a cultural touchstone after a key placement in the first season of 13 Reasons Why in 2017, sending the track up the charts in multiple countries and earning a platinum certification. The band later remixed it with Phoebe Bridgers for the show’s second season. Vide Noir (2018) was their major-label debut on Republic Records, a darker, more expansive record that reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and came with an ambitious rollout that placed songs at real-world geographic locations.
