Frank Ocean

The reclusive innovator who reshaped R&B with Channel Orange and Blonde, behind Thinkin Bout You, Pink + White and Nights.

Frank Ocean is one of the most influential and elusive figures in modern music. He reshaped R&B with two albums and a near-total refusal to play by the industry’s rules. Born Christopher Edwin Breaux on October 28, 1987, in Long Beach, California, he was raised in New Orleans and took his stage name from Frank Sinatra and the film Ocean’s 11.

From ghostwriter to Odd Future

After Hurricane Katrina destroyed his studio, Ocean moved to Los Angeles and wrote songs for other artists before joining the rap collective Odd Future. His 2011 mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra, released free on Tumblr, made critics pay attention, and a feature on JAY-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” raised his profile further.

Channel Orange

His debut album, Channel Orange (2012), won universal acclaim for songs like “Thinkin Bout You”, “Pyramids” and “Bad Religion”, and took the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Days before its release, Ocean published an open letter revealing his first love had been a man, a landmark moment for queer visibility in R&B and hip-hop.

Blonde

After a long wait, Ocean released the visual album Endless and then Blonde in 2016, a sparse, experimental record that topped the chart and became a touchstone for a generation. He withheld it from Grammy consideration, criticizing the awards over representation. He has barely released music since, and the silence has only grown his myth.

The wider reach

Beyond his own albums, Ocean has shaped the work of others. He co-wrote and sang on Beyonce‘s “Superpower” and contributed to records by JAY-Z, Kanye West and Tyler, the Creator. His influence on contemporary R&B far outweighs the size of his catalogue.
