Bruno Mars is one of the most dependable hitmakers of his era, a singer, songwriter and showman who can move from doo-wop to funk to power ballad without missing a step. Born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he started as a songwriter before stepping out front in 2010. Since then he has won sixteen Grammy Awards and stacked up nine number-one singles, with a live show that has made him one of the biggest stage draws in pop.
From songwriter to star
Mars first broke through writing and guesting on other people’s records, including the 2009 chart-topper “Nothin’ on You” by B.o.B. His own debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, arrived in 2010 with “Just the Way You Are”, which won his first Grammy and went on to become the highest-certified song in US history. “Grenade” and “The Lazy Song” kept him on the radio.
Funk and a run of hits
Unorthodox Jukebox in 2012 brought “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man”. Then came the Mark Ronson collaboration “Uptown Funk” in 2014, which spent fourteen weeks at number one and became Billboard’s biggest song of the decade. His third album, 24K Magic, leaned hard into 1980s and 1990s R&B and won Album of the Year, with “That’s What I Like” and “Finesse” as standouts.
Silk Sonic
In 2021 Mars teamed with Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic, a loving throwback to 1970s soul. Their single “Leave the Door Open” topped the charts and swept its Grammy categories, taking Record and Song of the Year among others. Rather than chase trends, the project bet on live instruments and old-school craft, and it paid off.
Global duets
Mars spent the mid-2020s as pop’s favorite duet partner. “Die with a Smile” with Lady Gaga, released in 2024, became a worldwide number one and won Best Pop Duo or Group Performance, his sixteenth Grammy. “APT.” with Rose of Blackpink followed and topped charts across Asia and beyond. In early 2025 he became the first artist to pass 150 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
The showman
For all the records, Mars is at his best on a stage. He headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in 2014 and returned in 2016 alongside Beyonce and Coldplay. His Las Vegas residency has run for years, and in 2026 he released The Romantic, his first solo album in a decade, and launched his first solo world tour in nearly as long.
